If you are charged with a moving motor vehicle violation. you may request to take a Driving Safety Course (DSC) to keep the violation off your driving record. You must make your request on or before the appearance date indicated on your citation. Do not take a driving safety course without first obtaining permission from the Court.

You are eligible to request this course if you:

  • You have a valid Non-CDL Texas Driver's License,
  • You have not already paid for your fine which resulted in a final conviction on this case,
  • You have evidence of financial responsibility (Liability Insurance),
  • You have not taken a Driver's Safety Course to dismiss a traffic ticket in the last 12 months (Calculated from the date of course completion to the date of your current citation),
  • You are not charged with speeding in excess of 24 miles per hour over the speed limit, or 95 mph or more,
  • You are not charged with a violation occurring in a construction zone,
  • You are not charged with any of the following violations:
    • failure to give information at an accident scene;
    • leaving the scene of an accident;
    • fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer;
    • reckless driving;
    • passing a school bus; or
    • a serious traffic violation.

If you are eligible you may sign up for a Driving Safety Course by providing the following to the Court: 

  1.  Required fee:
          - Moving violations not occurring in School Zone - $144.00
          - Moving violations occurring in a School Zone - $169.00
  2. A copy of your valid Texas Driver's License
  3. A copy of your liability insurance card or other evidence of the required financial responsibility
  4. Enter a plea of Guilty or No Contest
  5. Sign a sworn affidavit declaring that you are eligible to take a driving safety course

THE FIVE (5) ITEMS NUMBERED ABOVE MUST BE SUBMITTED ON OR BEFORE THE "APPEAR BY DATE" ON THE FRONT OF YOUR CITATION.  LATE OR INCOMPLETE REQUESTS WILL BE REJECTED.  

Once you are authorized by the Judge, you have 90 days to complete the course and proof of completion to the Court. The DSC provider must be approved by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulations (TDLR) and the course may be taken either online, in a classroom setting. You must also provide to the court a certified copy of your driving record as maintained by the Texas Department of Public Safety. If you fail to comply with these conditions, you will receive notice of a hearing requiring you to appear in court to explain why you failed to show proof of completion. If you have a good reason why you were unable to comply, the Judge may, but is not required to, grant you an extension to complete the course.
